How to choose an auto apply tool
A checklist for comparing auto apply tools without reading a dozen landing pages. Each question has an answer to look for and the answer Advant gives.
Auto apply landing pages mostly promise the same thing: more applications, less work. The differences that matter are in how a tool behaves when things go wrong. These nine questions expose that quickly. Ask them of any tool, including ours.
1. Who chooses the jobs?
Look for a tool where you pick the roles, or approve a shortlist you can read. "Applies to hundreds of jobs for you" means the tool chose.
Advant: you pick. It shows why each role matched before you decide.
2. What exactly gets submitted?
Ask whether the résumé changes per posting or a single file goes everywhere, and who wrote the words in it. Text a language model invented about you is a risk. An application built from your own résumé is not.
Advant: the résumé version that fits each posting, chosen from versions you wrote, plus your own cover letter with the company and role filled in. Advant does not write your application with a language model.
3. Which application forms does it support, by name?
"All sites" is not an answer. A specific list is. Hosted forms with no login are easy to automate. Sites that need an account per company are harder, and a tool should say how it handles them.
Advant: Greenhouse, Lever, and Ashby from the cloud. Workday, iCIMS, and other sign-in sites through a Chrome extension in your browser.
4. What happens when a question has no answer?
The bad answers are "it guesses" and "it skips the field". The good one is that it stops, shows you the question, and remembers what you say.
Advant: the application moves to needs you with the questions listed. You answer once and it goes back in the queue.
5. When does it call an application sent?
Look for a tool that waits for the employer's confirmation. If it marks an application as applied the moment it clicks the button, a failed submit looks the same as a good one.
Advant: submitted means the employer's page confirmed it.
6. Can it send the same application twice?
Timeouts happen. A tool that retries after an unknown result can double-submit. Ask what it does instead.
Advant: an unknown outcome becomes needs you and is never retried, and a submitted application is never queued again.
7. Can you review before it submits?
You want a setting that fills the form and leaves the last click to you, at least for the roles you care about most.
Advant: review before submit fills the form in your browser and you press submit.
8. Where does it run, and what does it hold of yours?
A cloud tool runs without your logins. A browser extension runs with them. Either is fine if the tool says which, and says what it stores and what its credentials can reach. Also ask how you delete your data.
Advant: cloud filing for Greenhouse, Lever, and Ashby, and the extension for the rest. The extension key reads your queue and reports results, and cannot reach the rest of your account. It expires. You can delete your account in Profile.
9. What does the free plan cap, and what happens at the cap?
Free trials that hide the cap until you are mid-search are a common irritation. Ask for the number before you sign up.
Advant: your first 25 tailored applications are free. Pro removes the cap.
Reading the answers
If a tool fails on numbers 4, 5, or 6, walk away, however good its interface looks. Those are the failures you will not notice until you are waiting on replies that are never coming.
