How to automate job applications without spamming anyone

Automate the data entry, keep the judgment. A working order of operations for an engineer who wants to apply to more of the right roles.

You can automate most of a job application. You should not automate the part where you decide it is worth sending. This is the order that keeps those two apart.

1. Write your profile once

Put down the things every form asks for: your stack, seniority, location, work authorization, and links to code or projects. The point is to answer those questions one time and have every form start filled in.

Keep the links honest. A GitHub profile with real work in it does more than an adjective in a cover letter.

2. Build a shortlist by fit

Read each posting against your stack and seniority. If you cannot say in a sentence why you would be good for it, drop it. A short list of roles you can defend beats a long one you cannot.

Advant scores live software engineering roles against your profile and shows the reasons, so the reading is quick. You pick from that list. Nothing gets applied to on its own.

3. Keep a few résumé versions

A useful application leads with the experience that role asks for. Write a version of your résumé for each kind of role you want, such as backend, infrastructure, or data, instead of sending one file everywhere. Keep the words yours: AI-written text is not the advantage people hope it is.

Advant picks the version whose keywords match the posting, counting a match in the job title three times as much as one in the description, and shows you which one it chose and why.

4. Decide where you want a hand on the button

For the roles you care about most, turn on review before submit. The form gets filled in your browser and you press submit yourself. For the rest, let it submit and check the tracker.

5. Let the forms fill themselves

The forms that automate cleanly are the hosted ones that need no candidate account, and that is why Greenhouse, Lever, and Ashby can be filed from the cloud. Workday and iCIMS usually want an account per company, so those run in your own browser through the Chrome extension, where your sign-ins already live.

6. Answer open questions once

Some questions have no answer in your profile, such as why you want this company. Write those yourself, once. Advant lists the question, saves what you write, and sends the application after you answer.

What never to automate

  • Picking the roles.
  • The "why us" answers.
  • Any negotiation after the first reply.

Start small

Your first 25 tailored applications on Advant are free. Use them on roles you would have applied to anyway and compare the time it took. The full setup is on the auto apply page.
